For nearly 25 years the World Cup featured 32 teams. The 2026 edition jumps to 48 — the largest expansion the tournament has ever seen. The goal is straightforward: give more nations, more confederations and more fans a stake in the world's biggest sporting event. More teams also means more matches — the tournament grows from 64 games to 104, stretching across roughly five and a half weeks and three countries.
The 48 teams are drawn into 12 groups of four. Each team plays the other three in its group once, so every nation is still guaranteed three group matches. An earlier proposal floated 16 groups of three, but it was scrapped over fears that the final round of group games could become dead rubbers open to collusion. Four-team groups keep the drama alive until the last whistle.
From each group of four, the top two teams advance automatically — that's 24 teams. The eight best third-placed teams across all 12 groups also advance, for 32 teams in the knockout stage. Finishing third is no longer an automatic exit, but it is a gamble: only the eight best third-placed sides survive, decided on goal difference, goals scored and results.
The expansion introduces a stage the World Cup has never had before: a Round of 32. From there the bracket is familiar — Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, the third-place play-off and the final. A team that goes all the way plays eight matches in total (three group games plus five knockouts), one more than the seven required in the old 32-team format. Every knockout match is single-elimination: level after 90 minutes means extra time, and still level means a penalty shootout.
The tournament runs from 11 June to 19 July 2026, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Mexico City's historic Estadio Azteca stages the opening match, while the final is played at MetLife Stadium in the New York/New Jersey area on 19 July.
